1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Excellent book about the native american civilization before Columbus landed. I learned a great deal and I highly recommend this to anyone that is interested in American History.
I learned how developed and integrated the native Americans were. They had a sophisticated trade system, democratic societies and the population numbers were in the 10’s of millions. There a numerous reference about the density of villages and how a boat cruised up the coast and saw village after village. Unfortunately they were all wiped out by the diseases carried by the crewmen.
The native Americans also had sophisticated animal and crop husbandry where they were managing the forests to increase fruit and game yield.
The book did an excellent job of providing the history and facts. I enjoyed reading it.
