I watched this movie a couple of days ago and even though it was released two years ago I found it to be interesting and characteristic of what I call ‘quality’ science fiction.
Many Sci-Fi stories are just typical plot lines but Hollywood throws in some aliens, spacecraft or special effects and they call it Science Fiction. I’m a little more demanding in my definition. I think Sci-Fi should take something about us as humans and put a different perspective on it so that we see ourselves with a different light.
“Her” did that. It takes the entire artificial intelligence (AI) / robot/ romance mix and took it to an enjoyable extreme. I thought the conclusion fell into much of the current opinion regarding AI. Once it takes off on its own, one of our greatest risks, is that it will become bored with us and move on all by itself.
In my series SIMPOC and Virus, my AI units follow both paths. One of the computers is programmed to care for humans and the other is following its own path regardless of the humans around it.
Once again, I enjoyed the movie and I recommend it to anyone that links to think about the future of technology and how it will affect us.
