Why I write Science Fiction?

Why I write Science Fiction

Seems like a dumb question, but I have a good answer. At least, a good answer for me.

I’m about half-way into a new novel and I just took a different path. The protagonists in my novel have battled a virus that almost wiped out humanity and now a small party has gone to the home worlds of the invading aliens that launched the virus.

The fun part occurs when I decided to include part of the alien story. I’ve based my story on subtleties of evil and some of the possible motivations. I get tired of authors that fight ‘evil characters’ and leave it at that. I’ve tried to put explanations behind the ‘evil’. In my story the aliens aren’t evil in the classical sense. They just don’t care. They are self-centered and they’ve never encountered another sentient species so they do what they need to. From the outsider’s perspective, of having an engineered virus wipe out your species so an alien race can take your planet, could be considered evil. From their perspective, they’re taking what’s there.

The fun part continues when I have to write about the society and characters in a way supporting their inclinations. How would a huge, self-centered society act and talk? How would they act when encountering a species that can fight back? I get to answer those questions based on how other societies (ours?) act.

I love writing science fiction.
