This is a good article from the Anderson Institute. The article describes the prevalent concepts of time and how possible time travel falls within Newton’s definition of time but it doesn’t fall within Leibniz’s and Kan’s definition of time.

Isaac Newton perceived time as occurring in its own dimension and each point in time is within a container. Given that definition Newton thought that time travel was possible. The traveler could move from one discrete container to another.

Leibniz and Kan had a different concept of time. They believe it to be fundamental to the structure of the universe and it is neither an event of thing. Within that definition, time travel isn’t possible from their perspective.

All of us Science Fiction authors should be hoping that Newton is right and time travel is possible. Regardless, I am disappointed that Steven Hawking’s time traveler party didn’t have a couple of odd people wearing party hats.
